The Division of Industrial Waste Water Management implements programs to prevent or clean up the pollution by industry of surface and ground water in Massachusetts. Programs are also implemented at the local level under regional offices of the Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) by the various regional engineers for resource protection. The division, in accordance with the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (PL 92-500, s 402; PL 95-217) and the Massachusetts Clean Water Act (MGLA c 21, ss 26-52), joins with the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program of permits to authorize and control discharge of pollutants into surface water. This series has been created by DEP regional office staff under successive jurisdiction of the Division of Water Pollution Control and the Division of Industrial Waste Water Management to monitor compliance with provisions of NPDES permits.
